    NO NO NANETTE
    Window Card
    RUBY KEELER
    *  PATSY KELLY * BOBBY VAN. NO, NO NANETTE . This was the first of the so-called "nostalgia" shows of the late 20th-century. And it was a huge success. After a thirty year absence from show business, Ruby Keeler was coaxed out of retirement and headed the cast of this 1971 revival from 1925 with music by Vincent Youmans. Audiences sighed in nostalgic rhapsody to the familiar strains of "TEA FOR TWO" and 'I WANT TO BE HAPPY" and they all but swooned at the sentimental tap-tap-tap of their lovingly remembered RUBY KEELER dancing slippers. (She was also the former Mrs. Al Jolson.) Theatre critics dusted off their superlatives and sped NO NO NANETTE along to a nearly 900-performance run on Broadway and a subsequent tour of two years. HELEN GALLAGHER won the Tony as Best Actress and Donald Saddler won for his memorable choreography. But let's talk about this window card. It was designed by Hilary Knight, one of our most in-demand illustrators. Knight has designed a slew of window cards and posters for the Broadway world and has even had a one-man show at Lincoln Center.  He is probably best-known as the co-creator (with Kay Thompson) of the mischievous and ageless ELOISE and at 94 he is still making art and history. His design for this particular window card finds him at the height of his bubbly romanticism with long-limbed, spright-like maidens leaping jauntily from garlands of pink flowers and surrounding marginally the theatrical credits. This is exactly what a window card for a 1920's Broadway musical (and its 1970's revival) ought to look like. Knight has captured the spirit of the whole genre.
